about

The Joy Thieves – Dan Milligan
Why did we want to be a part of the compliation?

I must admit that in all of my life, it had never even occurred to me to try to record a version of any of the songs from ‘The Wall.’ It simply means too much to me. The recordings are too sonically pristine. Pink Floyd’s arrangement and instrumentation are too perfect. The delicacy with which they merged the highest highs with the lowest lows is too powerful. In my eyes, it is perfection. The shoes were too big to fill.

So, what changed?
For me, finding out that all of the proceeds for this project were going to Doctors Without Borders made all the difference. Knowing that by contributing to this project, we had the chance to actively making the world a better place shifted my perspective. And suddenly, instead of feeling like ‘The Wall’ was some untouchable masterpiece from the past, it started to feel alive again. And I began to excitedly embrace the possibility that The Joy Thieves could play a small part in improving other people’s lives the way that the original album had improved mine.

Why did we choose the songs we chose?
From the moment The Joy Thieves signed on to do a song for this release, I had my eyes firmly set on ‘One of My Turns.’ I have a lifelong affinity for many kinds of music, but I tend to gravitate towards either atmospheric and melodic music that soothes, or harsh music that is full of rage. As you can imagine, the “calm one minute, batshit crazy the next” quality of ‘One of My Turns’ appeals to both of those sides of me, so it felt like the perfect choice. But it also felt like an *extremely* tall order, because it is such a pivotal and important moment on the album. I had a feeling the music would come together fairly easily, but what vocalist did I know who could navigate both the calm crooning AND the explosive rage? I could only think of one.

Chris Connelly.

So, I made a decision. If Chris agreed to be the vocalist, we would do it. And if not, we wouldn’t.
He did.

Once we decided to do one song, it somehow felt easier to do more, so I reached out to one of my favorite female vocalists, Ania Tarnowska of I Ya Toyah. After some discussion, we decided that ‘Don’t Leave Me Now’ would be the perfect song for her highly emotional and powerful voice. We also decided we wanted to truly reinvent the song, and offer up a new brand perspective on it. We’ve worked together before, so I thought I knew what to expect from her as we entered the studio that night, but I was wrong. The vocal performance she delivered is nothing short of staggering, and I get goosebumps every time I hear it. EVERY. TIME.

The Thieves’ final addition came in a similar bolt of inspiration as ‘One of My Turns.’ I was listening to ‘The Wall,’ and ‘Empty Spaces’ came on. And suddenly, it hit me. The perfect voice for that song belongs to the one and only Raymond Watts. Once again, I made the decision that if he agreed to sing it, we would pursue it. And if not, we would only submit two songs. We had never recorded anything together before this, so getting him to do it seemed like a long shot, at best…but he agreed. And then he proceeded to deliver in spades….in the way that only he could.
